WHEN THE AIR COMES BACK

THE AIR COMES BACK — Chapter 8 - WHEN THE AIR COMES BACK

One year after the gala, Greywick House hosted another dinner.

There were sixty people instead of two hundred.

No television crews.

No acquisition announcement.

The guests were housing managers, tenant representatives, building engineers, nurses, maintenance workers and members of the new residential oversight council.

Graham was not in charge of any of them.

He had offered the house because it had space.

That was all.

Before dinner, he walked through the corridor outside the ballroom.

The marble had been polished.

The console table remained exactly where it had been.

For a moment he could see the empty inhaler skittering across the floor.

He could see a small girl stepping through the service door.

He could hear her voice.

Mama says the air comes back.

It had.

Not all at once.

Not cleanly.

His company had lost money.

People had lost jobs.

Tenants had lost trust.

His son had lost a career he had expected to inherit.

Graham had lost the comforting version of himself in which ignorance reduced responsibility.

Some things had improved.

Others would take years.

That was what consequences looked like when they were real.

The ballroom door opened.

Nolan stepped out.

He had flown in from Phoenix that afternoon.

The new job was smaller.

He claimed to like that.

Graham suspected he was telling the truth.

"Why are you hiding out here?" Nolan asked.

"I'm not."

"You're standing alone in a hallway during your own dinner."

"It's not my dinner."

Nolan smiled.

"Still your hallway."

From inside came a burst of laughter.

Graham recognized Tessa's voice.

Marisol had resisted the invitation until she learned three other Barlow tenants were attending.

Then she agreed.

Graham had not seated them beside him.

He had finally learned.

Nolan leaned against the wall.

"You ever think about selling this place?"

"Constantly."

"You won't."

"Probably not."

His son nodded toward the ballroom.

"You ready?"

Graham looked through the open door.

Tessa was standing on a chair while Marisol tried to convince her to sit down.

One of the engineers was laughing.

A maintenance supervisor from Barlow was talking to a tenant representative over bread.

No stage.

No prepared remarks.

No giant screen displaying growth projections.

Just people who normally occupied different floors of the same system sitting in one room.

Graham reached automatically into his jacket.

The inhaler was there.

Full.

Nolan noticed.

"You check that thing every five minutes now?"

"Frequently."

"Trauma."

"Experience."

They entered together.

Halfway across the ballroom, Tessa spotted Graham.

She climbed down from the chair and ran toward him.

Marisol called after her not to run indoors.

Tessa ignored her.

She stopped in front of Graham and held up something.

A sheet of paper.

It was a school drawing.

Three people stood beneath a blue sky.

One was very small.

One had long dark hair.

One was absurdly tall with gray hair and arms almost to his knees.

In the corner she had drawn a blue rectangle.

"What's that?" Graham asked.

"Your inhaler."

"Why is it enormous?"

"So you don't lose it."

Nolan laughed behind him.

Graham accepted the drawing.

"Excellent planning."

Tessa pointed at the figures.

"That's me. That's Mama. That's you."

"What are we doing?"

She looked at him as though the answer were obvious.

"Breathing."

Graham could not answer immediately.

Marisol reached them.

"Tessa, you cannot just hand people drawings and demand emotional reactions."

"I didn't demand."

Marisol looked at Graham.

"You all right?"

He looked at the ridiculous blue inhaler.

At the child.

At her mother.

At his son.

Then toward the ballroom full of people his company once divided into owners, employees, vendors and tenants as though those categories explained whose problems mattered most.

"Yes," he said.

And this time, when he drew a breath, nothing stopped it.
